The Hennepin Crawler, Built By Krank Boom Clank

The Hennepin Crawler, Built By Krank Boom Clank

Certain builds that we run across forever intrigue us. I guess you could say that we have a soft spot for all that is Steampunk and the artists in this genre such as Ron Pippin. To me the builds in this design motif employ quite a few things pleasing to the eye in the form of brass, copper, leather and a Victorian era design scheme. These varying materials always seem to go together well as they age in a similar manner and start to feel worn in and create a unique patina.

Driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge / Tunnel Linking The Eastern Shore Of Virginia to The Mainland

Driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge / Tunnel linking the eastern shore of Virginia to the mainland

Only a few places on earth make me feel as alive, the moment I see them, as the Chesapeake Bay. There is nothing quite like this region and especially the mouth of it opening into the Atlantic Ocean, linking the eastern shore of Virginia to the mainland. Growing up on the Delmarva peninsula we are isolated from everything, except the salty air, austere locals and the beautiful land between the bay and ocean. Life is a bit slower and the dialect is as crisp as Old Bay seeping into a cut after eating hard shell crabs, but I hope it never changes. This 17 mile wide expanse is something to be thankful for on this holiday as it is one of the cradle's of history for the East Coast and the birth of America.

A Rolling Sculpture Ready For The Chronicles Of Riddick

Rafik Kaissi and his unique RK Bearing

Indian Larry on one of the Biker Buildoff's on Discovery Channel talked about how building custom motorcycles employed all of the arts into one. The use of engineering, fabrication, design, painting and sculpture, all working together as a higher art form. To be honest, he was completely right. Not every bike was made to be loved by everyone and nor should a bike always be made to fit into some category. There are enough builders doing that, but to break new ground and do something that is a unique vision, whether or not its meant to be a daily freeway rider is a true iconoclast and free thinker.

The Shazam Effect Is Ruining The Future of Music

Because of the Shazam Effect, lackeys such as Justin Bieber get too much radio airplay
More often than not we hear from folks and they enjoy telling us about great new bands and or what is wrong with the music industry. Approaching an industry of this scale and speaking that direct about what is wrong, is as easy as telling Californians to not worry, desalination plants are going to save your water problems. It is just not that simple.

On the other hand, lets look at things from the perspective of pure entertainment. Many folks are just passive music fans. If its on the radio and its got a good beat, it is decent entertainment for the car ride from point A to point B. Corporate radio knows this all too well and plays directly to what listeners want and now have algorithms and mountains of data to back up what is the ideal music to be played. Does this challenge our senses or move the collective coolness of the needle towards a band that will shape culture for the future such as the likes of Led Zeppelin? Hardly imaginable these days, yet there has been a scientific study all about this scenario and its called the Shazam Effect.

A few years back Leroy and Rico of Hellbound Glory recorded a few tracks as a live taping for a pilot show at the Cash Cabin outside of Nashville with Judd Films. Without An Interesting Story, There Is No Film

New video from Skrillex produced by Ivan Herrera

The magic of film making is absurdly simple. Without an interesting story, there is nothing to shoot. Context, texture, atmosphere, characters and quite a few more elements coming together with a great story, help us to define a moment in time. Having a favorite movie, actor or director is a way for us an individuals to connect to a larger storyline in which we can live out any idea we can place ourselves into. One aspect that brings great viewing satisfaction especially for music videos occurs when a filmmaker takes liberties and builds a narrative out of the context of a story. Shooting a short film scene for scene around lyrics makes a video feel shallow and rehearsed compared to breathing fresh air into an already present storyline.

Could Youtube Music Key, Unlock The Door To Revive The Music Industry?

Liz Grauman/The New York Times
No matter how many fingers are pointed in one direction or another about the death of the music industry, one thing is for certain, even more music is being created daily without the restraints of worrying to sign to a major label. Becoming your own content manager is the law of the land now and within this land grab tools and resources are as vast as the Pacific. Luckily for us as consumers, a plethora of options exist about where to buy, stream or peruse for new artists and one of the best places is youtube.

The Shape of Hardcore To Come

Satisfaction may be the death of desire, but finding the balance of enjoyment and forever yearning to create anew is something the hardcore scene knows all too well. Punk rock is quick to pilfer its roots and can be ever so judgmental about what is true to form and what is just a knockoff.

A couple of the bands showcased here, derive elements from the past and add them to a current blended form to create a distinct sound and vibe. Each is helping to propel hardcore music forward and has their own take. Is this the the shape of punk to come?

Is Rock Music Dead? Slash Thinks Rock N' Roll Has Become A Bastard Stepchild, What Do You Think?

Slash thinks rock n' roll has become a bastard stepchild, what do you think?

It is becoming harder and harder to ignore the facts, but as fan interest seems to dwindle, rock n' roll seems to be a thing of the past. Even though there are bands far and wide waving the banner of rock n' roll, are things becoming too safe and diluted?

In a recent interview with the Manchester Evening News, Slash of Guns N' Roses fame stated "Rock and roll definitely needs a movement. It's become kind of the music industry's bothersome step child and what it needs is someone really committed to come and shake things up who doesn't give a shit if they make it." Is this a war cry for up and coming bands to realize their potential and to make rock n' roll dangerous again? We sure as hell hope so.

New Illustration For The Go Devils, North Carolinian's Who Play Pure Rock N' Roll

New drawing for the Go Devils - Pure Rock n' Roll

Been working on a few new illustrations that can be cranked out in an hour, compared to the ones that take way too much effort in all the details. Add in a lightning bolt thru the skull along with some loose text and that equals one cup of coffee down and my Sharpie practice for the day.
