The Forgotten New Yorker who Changed the ‘80s Music Scene

When the members of New Order arrived in New York for their first North American gigs in 1980, they were greeted by a booking agent, a drug supplier, a tour guide and their own personal chef — all of whom were the same woman.

The Brits were just one of dozens of new wave and post-punk acts imported across the Atlantic by New Yorker Ruth Polsky. During her tenure as a talent booker at seminal Manhattan nightclubs Hurrah on West 62nd Street (1979 to 1982) and Danceteria on West 21st Street (1982 to 1986), she was the first to take chances on then-unknown bands such as Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Smiths, the Psychedelic Furs and many more. With disco and rock still dominant in the charts, Polsky had a rare ear for fresh sounds, and took chances in bringing them to the United States before most other club bookers would dare.

I've interviewed musicians since I was a teenager, and in that time, I've learned two main lessons. The first lesson is that playing in a band is the greatest job in the world. For months at a time you and your friends get to travel from place to place sharing your art and ideas with audiences who are excited to see you play. The second lesson is that playing in a band is the worst job in the world. For months at a time you're away from your family and loved ones, performing songs you poured your heart into for minuscule crowds that are only there for the beer.

There are a lot of highs and lows for touring musicians. Anyone who has spent time on the road can tell you that one of the biggest concerns is figuring out where they're going to spend the night post concert. Recently I sat down with a handful of bands and asked about the worst place they've ever slept.

ANTiSEEN - Falls Count Anywhere, A collection of Wrestling Songs. Available July 10th

For months now we have been working on the details for a new type of showcase with a few of the bands we work with. It all started to come to shape with the new collection of songs being put together for the first time by the legendary ANTiSEEN. This collection puts all of their wrestling songs onto one amazing cd entitled Falls Count Anywhere.

Knowing the amount of interest the album was going to have, the one and only Jeff Clayton and I came together to work on ideas to help promote the album due out on July 10th world wide. One of the biggest ideas we had was to put on one hell of a show and due it in the right way to show bad ass these songs were going to be in one collection. After making the rounds, checking our rolodexes and looking at tour schedules we decided to put on one of the baddest Rock N' Rassle events that we could think of.

There are maps to the stars homes, maps for amazing back country ridin' roads, there are maps on your smart phones and then there are maps that just trump everything. The Rock N' Roll Metro Map is pure imagination and damn if we can't thank Alberto Antoniazzi for being a clever designer and thinker for coming up with something this great. Here is his story on it:

"The Rock’n’roll Metro Map™ is a self-initiated project based on the idea of representing the various genres of rock’n’roll music as the lines of a subway system. Including more than 200 bands, the map is just a personal vision of the music history of the past decades and not a real visualization of it, that’s because the number of artists and influences are impossible to be visualized in a 100% objective way."
