Rusty Knuckles Stealth Belt Loops

Our belt loops have become a great seller, but one question we kept getting asked was about attaching keys directly to the loop without a carabiner or larger key ring. Instead of using the crappy snap hooks that are available everywhere, we resourced some heavy duty hooks that are aircraft grade. These snap hooks will ultimately outlast the user and will be the best damn belt loop you could ever use.

Remove Brass Plating Easily, While Channeling MacGyver

Recently I purchased in bulk for one of our projects and by mistake, ordered the wrong finish on our D Rings for our leather belt loops. Instead of wasting time and money to send the D Rings back, I started researching about how to remove brass electro plating from the nickel plated finish that we originally wanted.

Instead of spending hours with sand paper I learned about the quick process of high strength oven cleaner and the magic that it uses. Well, not necessarily the magic of one as great as Gandalf, but the magic that resides within sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Depending on which oven cleaner you find, check the information on the spray can if you are interested in the exact chemistry. I got lucky and scored this Easy Off from the Dollar Store.

To make the process even easier and much more ideal for my eyes and nose, I dropped the D Rings into a plastic bowl and sprayed them with the oven cleaner to cover them thoroughly. With the D Rings covered I let the chemicals do their magic and left them to soak for about 16 hours. After checking on them once to see if they were done, I noticed they needed a bit more time and added some more oven cleaner.

After a full 24 hours the D Rings, all the brass electro plating had been removed and now I just had to clean them off with some towels. Included is a photo of one of the cleaned D Rings in our custom leather belt loops. Whatever you are deciding to clean a brass or gold plating finish from, do it in a well ventilated area as the chemicals within the oven cleaner are quite strong.

Check out the post we wrote up for this on Instructables.com

Make sure to thoroughly coat the brass that is to be removed.
Almost done, at this stage it was about 16 hours of chemical soaking. Add some more oven cleaner and keep soaking for a few more hours.

Rusty Knuckles Belt Loops Featured On Craftsman Slideshow

The biggest honor I think one can ever receive is when folks dig your work and talk on it. We have been producing our signature belt loops for about six months now. They are a clean style and made to function perfectly, plain and simple. It is a great honor to know they are featured on the Craftsman Tools Flickr slide show on Craftsman.com. Sears Craftsman tools and toolboxes have been a staple item with us, since getting our first three drawer tool box as a kid filled with sockets, a few ratchets and some other hand tools from the bearded one up north. Stoked beyond belief, is probably the best way we can sum things up.

Rough Design Company, Custom Indian Head Nickel Belt Loops

Thank you to all that peruse our site, read the blog and purchase the products we develop and create. All of our ideas for new products stem from the constant flow of pen to paper. It could be silkscreened tshirts, leather products or the brand new musicians and mechanics tool rolls we are currently just about to wrap up. Keeping the items we create new and fresh is our constant goal as we pride ourselves on craftsmanship and a job well done.

We are humbled when approached by folks we have never met and asked to create some cool gifts to represent their company. One of those companies just so happens to be Kevin of Rough Design Company. His approach to reviving disregarded objects and furniture is refreshing and one that speaks to sustainability and craftsmanship. Needless to say, we are damn stoked to craft the new belt loops for Rough Design Co. and look forward to future projects and great conversation, from all sorts of new folks in 2013.

Rusty Knuckles Custom Tool Bags and Belt Loops

For the last few months we have been schooling ourselves in leather work to crank out a plethora of new items for us and the bands. Needless to say we are damn proud of the new products coming out and getting a massive response. We will be debuting these products next weekend at Heavy Rebel Weekender. This fall stay tuned for another huge part of the leather goods to be arriving with a variety of saddle bags, belts, wallets and more band items focused on leather and metal etaching.

In the coming weeks we will be posting up videos of us creating these new items and also going into specifics about the types of leather being used. We are stoked to be able to offer cool items up for sale and to be able to back it up saying its all created in house by yours truly.

Keeping busy is something we tend to do quite well. The project board is forever being updated and the sketchbook is full of ideas for new things to create. Does this make us work long hours into the night with early morning rises? Why hells yes and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Huge shout out over to Mike over at TWT Motorcycle Parts for helping us get our new line of metal accessories off the ground. Without his help none of this would be possible. Thanks to all who have been placing orders. We have been severely backed up by the amount of orders coming in and products continue to sell out. If you are still waiting on a shipment, trust us, its coming. Thanks again to everyone for the continued support of all that is Rusty Knuckles and to all of the bands that we work with, we truly appreciate it.
