Screen Printing The Ramones Tribute Record Packaging

When it comes to understanding the process of how things work, that is something we can nerd out on all day long. Whether it be an engine running, watching a mill shape metal into a new part to be used or simply hanging out at our local print shop and watching Aardvark Printing do their magic. We can't thank them enough for their continual hard work on all of projects and their lightning fast turnaround. Some items sell out instantly and Greg and Mark keep us restocked within days, thanks fellas!

The photos below are from some recent projects being completed. Do yourself a favor, if you need some of the best screen printing done we have two shops that are beyond top notch. Out in Asheville, Matt over at BluBus Printing is a mad scientist on making new setups and can print anything. Here in Raleigh, Greg over at Aardvark is the go to man for all that is music industry for printing. If ya didn't already know, he is also the former drummer of Antiseen. Both are top notch and the only folks we work with for screen printing due to their quality work and competitive pricing.

Mondo Film Posters - Reimagining Classic Film

There is just something about classic movies that continue to make us want to view them over and over and over. Is it the plot lines, the depth the characters plunge into our psyche or is just damn good cinematography? If we had to pick one choice of that bunch, we would have to go with character depth, but then again, without a solid plot line the characters could be as flat as pancakes.

Mondo prints classic movie posters re-envisioned by a plethora of designers, illustrators and mad thinkers. Their approach is DIY and the way in which the posters are printed in small editions makes them even better. We have missed out on quite a few gems that we would dig for our walls such as the ones below. Dig into their archives and blog and see what Mondo is all about.

Relief Cut Book Sculptures, Communicating Indepth

Will the printed word soon be lost, as we as a whole move ever so quickly into digital communications? Maybe not in the next 10 to 15 years but if we can properly read the writing on the wall or more precisely our Kindles, Ipads, smartphones, etc the printed word might not even be thought about, compared to how we communicate in pixels. This is a sad realization, but one that reflects a massive change in our progression through technology.

After recently watching a biography on Steve Jobs and hearing about his ideas for the ipad some thirty years ago, which ultimately yielded notions for the iphone and many other devices, we were quite intrigued. If he was this forward thinking and knew we would be moving away from a printed medium, will working in print related terms still be relative? Personally, I believe it will, as there will forever be a voice for old technology, but it will just feel a bit outdated and dare we say, folks will have to work a bit with it. Yes, work, a crazy idea that something is not just a google search away or that you have to manually retrieve and discover the answer. The printed word is an effective medium for communication but in the long haul costs will determine output and this may be why printed communications ultimately lose the battle.

Mix all these ideas into a blender and someone such as Brian Dettmer becomes amazingly interesting. We have seen a lot of mash up art and design ideas throughout the years but when it comes to craftsmanship, that is where we break out the loop and examine very carefully as we dig artisans.

Brian has a unique spin with his ideas as it is more a matter of letting the object reveal itself, rather than him depicting an object. Take for example his book sculptures featured here. Not only does he show the contents of the book, but each book takes on a new light as much of the inner materail is now seen together revealing itself in a new context. The layered effect plays directly into our technology infused communication of today. We see through all the news, pop culture and life events looking for more substance or a back story. If we cannot grasp what exactly is going on we look to another source instead of taking what we see or hear as the final word. Technology has made us dig deeper on many levels and Brian's work does the same but he pushes us to do it in a literal and physical way. For this we thank him and sites such as neatorama for being the perfect aggregator on finding new and clever ways of thinking.

Hand Printed Chopper 2012 Calendars By Ocho Loco Press

The further along we progress into this thing called life, we are continually amazed about some of the folks that we know and can call friends. I was fortunate to have met John, the creator of these prints, through a few friends back in San Francisco and we ended up runnin' into one another of course through mutual motorcycle brethren and struck up an acquaintance. Every year I would see him down at Flatstock in Austin for SXSW and would always dig seeing the new work and we talked on eventually getting a project together.

Well folks, that day has come and this is the first collaboration between Ocho Loco Press and Rusty Knuckles. So if you dig choppers and want to have your calendar on the wall along with some killer screened art, hand cut into rubylith separations done the old fashioned way, then this is right up your alley. These are limited to 100 prints and one hundred only. All are numbered so once they are gone, you will have to wait for next years calendar and or poster to be cooked up.

We are stoked beyond belief at the killer prints and to work with John over at Ocho Loco Press. Yeah, ok, now we are just going to stare at these for a while. The calendars are printed on wood panel and measure 17.75" x 9" so they are a great size and will grace many a wall for years to come.
