Big Mountain Run Cancelled, Damn...

Go figure, the great event that was the Big Mountain Run is now all said and done. Damn it. Was looking forward to our annual pilgrimage to the Tennessee hills in May, but this year we will be making other plans. During mid July a gathering is already being planned in southern Ohio on the Kentucky border. If you know us, get in touch on the plans. Ya don't need a mass amount of folks to have a good time, just the right individuals, same as our fall gathering, Run What Ya Brung.

Big Mountain Run cancelled for Spring of 2013

"So here’s the deal with Big Mountain Run for the Spring of 2013. As of now, it has been canceled. There will not be an event produced by Cycle Source Magazine for Mat under the name of Big Mountain Run or not. The reason, since there seems to be some speculation as to why it’s not going on, is simply this: As time grew close for planning, the property owner conveyed some concerns about a certain group of attendees at last years rally. He thought their behavior was a little out of line and would have rather we didn’t invite them back again this year. When I explained to him that they were good guys and had been at BMR in support of us from the beginning and we wouldn’t tell them not to come, he further explained that the property would not be available this year. This is his right, just as it is our choice to not turn away people who have supported us over the years. With such a short amount of time left to find another location we feel that we’d rather wait until later this year or even until next year and do this event right with a new location. I know that many people plan their vacations according to this event, and to all of you I apologize but  I started BMR to have a good time with my friends and I can’t tell some of them not to come because another property owner is freaked out by how we have fun. A good brother of mine once told me that you can never trade freedom for safety……I believe in those words more today than ever before. After all, good men and women have fought wars for this country so its people would have hat freedom.   We are already working on the panning of the next event so please stay tuned to the Cycle Source blog and as soon as we know something we’ll get it to you."

Halfpipes And Motorcycles, We Are Featured In Easy Rider Magazine

Consistently we are talking up the Big Mountain Run, put on by Cycle Source Magazine as one of our favorite runs. The location, the riders and the overall chemistry of the event make it truly great. The remote location most likely keeps the hordes from attending, but that is the charm. Rolling deep into the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee for a weekend of good times and motorcycle mayhem should be on any biker's agenda. Thanks to Rob for sending us a text on the article in August 2012 issue of Easy Rider in which there is a full feature article on the run and a photo of Sal and I are riding the metal halfpipe. Damn good times for sure.

Flat Tires Will Destroy The Big Mountain Run

That's right, we are predicting it across the world wide channel of all that is great in the realm of motorcycles, rock n' roll and good times. The Flat Tires are going to flat out destroy the stage, crowd, cases of beer, the country side, mindsets and yeah, ahem, what he said  at the Big Mountain Run.

Most of all, the Flat Tires are going to prove that they are best damned Punk Rock band working today. Hell, we don't even tend to think of it as punk rock, as that connotation is so over used. So chew on this and think on their sound. The Flat Tires are straight up Juke Joint Rock N' Roll Villains. Now that you have heard the best way to describe their fire brand of a sound, pay attention to the track in this here video to promote Cycle Source's Big Mountain Run and get your asses on the bikes and get out to the hills, for this is a run not to miss.

15 Years of Cycle Source Magazine

For 15 solid years Cycle Source has been putting out one of the best motorcycle magazines in the industry. What makes them one of the best are the tech articles and their consistently solid approach to seeking out new stories. It is easy to take photos of most any bike, do a quick write up and call it an article, but Cycle Source are wordsmith's. The vibe they create within their magazine and on their annual Big Mountain Run is about solidarity and we will forever be fans for that reason.

Do yourself a favor if you are in the north east and get out to their 15th anniversary party.

Big "Mayhem" Run - The Tennessee Invasion

For three straight years Chris Callen and all the folks involved with Cycle Source Magazine have put on one hell of a shindig. What makes us like the Big Mountain Run better than any other event is simply that you do whatever the hell you want to do. The campsite is in a remote corner of Tennessee right next to the Hiwassee River so getting there is a long road into the hills along with it being nestled between the river and the railroad tracks also means that noise is never an issue. You can assume that everyone takes full advantage of this with burnouts, firecrackers, live music and various other things that go boom, making for the best damn biker party of the year.

We started out planning on meeting around noon this past thursday and motoring on over the 411 miles to the campsite, well that didn't quite work out. About 35 miles into the ride Brooklyn Joe's primary decided to explode and there we were stuck on the side of the road. A bolt had backed out into the primary chain and ripped it all into shreds and also cracking off a huge chunk of his primary cover, so Joe's bike was shot from the start. Not to let this deter us, we tore off and got the brand new Rusty Knuckles company van and picked up the bike, swapped him out with our cafe racer and now had a bike for Joe up in the hills to roll around on along with a supply wagon.

Finally rollin' into the campsite by about 3am and cold as all hell, we quickly found out that a lot of folks showed up this year for the festivities. With bikes strewn about everywhere, fire pits still blazing it was a welcome site to be back up in the hills. Over the next few days we turned Sal's bike into a yarder to haul trees and firewood, heard about a naked dude fighting another guy who invaded his tent, sampled fresh batches of tasty moonshine, blazed bikes through river streams, rode motorcycles on a halfpipe, witness guys lining up to be dragged behind bikes on stone and dirt, bought shitloads of fireworks from an old lady that loves things that go boom and still thinks its the 1920's, partied down with all the fellas in Led Sled, Justified Defiance, the Haints and many more while also riding a thousand miles with a shit eating grin thinkin' on how much more mayhem we can get into at next years Big "Mayhem" Run. Thanks to all who put on the Big Mountain Run, see ya next year and yes this time we are burning everything down with more fireworks and bigger explosions. Next year we are fishing the creek with ordinance. Will also be posting video here soon once we go through it all.

Big Mountain Run - Let's Roll

As we are about to embark on another Big Mountain Run I always get excited about hittin' the roads and knowing my bike is running smooth. This run is about one thing most of all and that is ridin'. Its a refreshing approach as folks come in from far and wide, all on bikes to make it happen. Trailers just don't seem to apply as you missed out some of the country's best roads just getting there and plus that's just not what its really about.

Its over 400 miles from our home base to the campsite, so that aspect alone cuts out 95% of anyone on two wheels who would make the journey. To hell with a bar hopper or a weekend bike, build something to ride anywhere at any time or buy a bike that you know you can roll to any event with. Who cares what make, model or builder set it up, ride the damn thing and enjoy it. Life is about the journey, so hit the road, take some photos and build up more stories for the campfire.

See ya on the other side...

Cycle Source - Big Mountain Run - Reliance, Tennessee

Just got back from a whirlwind of a 3 day run out to the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee to go to the Big Mountain Run, hosted by Cycle Source magazine. Truly wish I could have done the actual run again this year but time restraints didn't allow for it. So I did the next best thing, I wrenched on the bike to get things in order the night before and bolted out at 5am on friday morning to hit up some of the best roads in the country. As shitty as the rain was on friday, I still had a killer time tearing it up through the mountains. Only once did I truly hit the suck factor and that was at the very top of the Cherahola Skyway in which I hit heavy downpours and fog as thick as molasses. Luckily the gods of thunder were with me up there on Mt. Olympus and no truck or other bikes came plowing through me as I chugged through one of the most scenic roads in south in second gear, soaked through clothes and visibility at zero to nil. When I reached the Tennessee side of the Smokies the skies cleared up and it was one hell of a party to ride into. I can whole heartedly say if ya weren't there ya truly missed out. Here are a few photos and more on the Rusty Knuckles Flickr page.
