Spotify Is Working To Make Music Discovery More Personal, From Mashable
The way we explore and enjoy digital music is going to become quite a bit more interesting in 2013, especially on the Spotify platform. I personally enjoy the service and use it to find new music or peruse older albums, I don't currently have loaded onto Itunes. The new features which are highlighted below from an article on Mashable will open up quite a few new possibilities and further cement how much Pinterest has changed the way we view information online.

Spotify has plans to make music discovery more personalized and more social.
We've always classified discovery as Spotify's Achilles' heel. Because Spotify's catalogue is so large, finding new music or rediscovering old favorites is difficult.
For a time, Spotify was happy to relegate discovery details to the service's desktop apps. And while Spotify will continue to leverage those apps in helping users find new music, discovery will now be an intrinsic part of the Spotify service on all platforms.
The new features -- which will start rolling out in January -- are the most significant product upgrades that have hit Spotify since the service launched in 2008.
Check out this video to get a look at what the company wants to do.
In a view that looks similar to Pinterest, users can get real-time info on music their friends and influencers are listening to.
More than just showing the activity of your Facebook friends, the Follow tab is designed as its own network of sorts for Spotify users you want to follow.
The Follow tab will also be a way for influencers, celebrities and artists to share their tastes and song picks with an audience. Just as bands can share their favorite photos to Instagram, they can share their latest albums or their picks for what bands they dig on Spotify.
The Discover tab pumps in info from Songkick, Tunigo and Pitchfork to deliver information such as reviews, nearby concerts and related or similar acts.
Rival services such as Rdio and Rhapsody have used the collection motif successfully for years so it's great to see Spotify catching up.
Spotify will also introduce audio previews -- a way to briefly hear a new song before deciding if you want to move away from the song you're playing now.
Another big move for artists is that Spotify will now offer mobile push notifications for new album releases for artists' users follow. For us, this has huge potential for artists and labels who want to use Spotify as a promotional strategy to work alongside traditional retail and digital releases.
When we spoke with the Spotify team, it was clear that everyone involved was excited about what the advent of true social discovery could mean for the service. With more than one million paying users in the United States and the support of artists such as Metallica, it's crucial that Spotify move quickly into personalization and discovery.

The Follow Tab
The core to Spotify's new experience is what it's dubbing the Follow tab. Think of the Follow tab as Apple's ill-fated Ping service, but done correctly. In a view that looks similar to Pinterest, users can get real-time info on music their friends and influencers are listening to.

The Discover Tab
The second component to the next Spotify update is about music discovery. This tab will show users relevant artists and playlists based on what they have in their library, what the people they trust listen to, as well as listening history. The Discover tab pumps in info from Songkick, Tunigo and Pitchfork to deliver information such as reviews, nearby concerts and related or similar acts.
Other New Features
Spotify is also rolling out some other improvements. One of the biggest is "Collection," which is just what it sounds like. Rather than having to create a playlist for every album you want to save, you can just add it to a collection instead.Rival services such as Rdio and Rhapsody have used the collection motif successfully for years so it's great to see Spotify catching up.

The Future is Now
The Follow features will first appear on the desktop version of Spotify in the coming weeks. In the new year, the mobile apps and the new web app will get the features as well. When we spoke with the Spotify team, it was clear that everyone involved was excited about what the advent of true social discovery could mean for the service. Will Myspace Re-Emerge Or Do We Already Have Enough Social Networks?
From a band perspective, MySpace was indeed a great tool. One of the biggest gripes, is that they tried to offer way too much and all of the features became clouded in the excess garbage offered. If they would have stuck to being a music outlet and focused on their strengths, maybe the site could still be relevant. With Justin Timberlake and other rich folks putting a flag in the sand and relaunching MySpace, we kinda feel as if it's just been forgotten about. This is sort of like the dilemma that faces the department stores Sears and JCPenny. As fast as brands grow and in our ADD riddled and over saturated minds, if you don't keep the crowds coming back for more and lose them, chances might be, they are never coming back.

Fifteen months after its acquisition by Specific Media, we’re finally getting a sneak peek at the new MySpace.
Justin Timberlake — who took an ownership stake in the new MySpace — tweeted a link to a video previewing the new service.
Although Timberlake and members of the MySpace team were at CES 2012, most of the discussion was about a partnership with Panasonic and not the rebirth of the new service.
The video points to a new MySpace URL, New.MySpace.com, where users can give their email address for an invite to the new service.
The interface looks clean and attractive — but obviously we’ll have to wait for the beta launch to understand more about how this works.
What the new owners will have to do — celebrity investor or not — is prove to users why this MySpace is worth a user’s time.

What Is the New MySpace
So what is the new MySpace? The video overview doesn’t go into a lot of detail, but this is what we can ascertain so far:- Users log in with Facebook or Twitter and can then choose to bring photos or other information with them.
- Status updates look similar to the mobile app Path, with photos largely displayed and user comments showing up underneath.
- There is a large music component the service, which includes a way to browse albums, find popular songs and artists and more.
The interface looks clean and attractive — but obviously we’ll have to wait for the beta launch to understand more about how this works.
Does the MySpace Brand Mean Anything?
The biggest question I have about the new MySpace is whether or not the brand is worth anything. I’ve argued in the past that the biggest asset of MySpace is also its biggest liability. What the new owners will have to do — celebrity investor or not — is prove to users why this MySpace is worth a user’s time.

Pinterest: The Next Social Frontier for Music, From ReadWriteWeb
Social Media is forever changing and evolving directly in front of us. For a band and we as a label, keeping up with the online trends, is par for course. Little more than a few months ago, SoundCloud is working with Pinterest on letting users embed streaming music within boards. This is indeed a great thing and we have already built a full streaming section into the Rusty Knuckles Pinterest page.
For more information on what this holds for the future of streaming music within Pinterest, dive in deeper to the article below.

Rusty Knuckles Music is now streaming through Pinterest - click here |
"Pinterest is steadily growing out of the stereotype that it's just for sharing recipes and planning weddings. The social scrapbook already plays a central role in the social media strategies of visual artists, publishers and certain types of businesses. Now, with the addition of features for pinning music and video, musicians are catching on.
Just as early-adopter bands and artists flocked to Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram, some are experimenting with visual bookmarking on Pinterest. Conventions are emerging as those brave enough to dive in head-first experiment with different approaches.
The most obvious way musicians are using Pinterest is as a collection of visual artifacts from across the Web. This includes everything from photos of recent gigs, artists they admire or gear they love playing with to visual art that matches their music. This approach is akin to the way bands have used Tumblr.
Alanis Morissette uses Pinterest both as a promotional vehicle for her own work and as a way to connect with fans in a more meaningful way. That includes not only a scrapbook of personal photos but also a pinboard dedicated to sharing favorite quotes and a board titled "Alanis Recommends" containing mostly self-help books. These features add a personal flavor to her social media presence, something Pinterest is uniquely positioned to help facilitate.
Beyond Pictures: Sound and Video
Despite its roots, Pinterest is no longer just about imagery. It also happens to be a good way to share sounds and videos, a fact that makes it increasingly appealing to musicians looking to promote their work. Music videos from sources like YouTube, Vimeo and others can be embedded directly into Pinterest pages and, not unlike Twitter or Tumblr, can be "repinned" by others, creating the potential for content to go viral.
Last week, the site officially integrated with SoundCloud, a partnership that makes Pinterest an even more natural fit for bands and musicians. Until now, the most effective way to share a song on Pinterest was to pin a YouTube video containing the track. This new feature simplifies things a bit and provides an additional avenue for distributing audio files.
Yoko Ono was quick to take advantage of SoundCloud support. The artist and wife of the late John Lennon uses the feature to embed new songs as well as audio clips from radio appearances. The "SoundCloud" board on Ono's account includes everything from music recorded with her late husband to a recent episode of a radio program on which Ono appeared with her son Sean Lennon. Her Pinterest account also serves as a home to past visual art projects, writings and activism-related links.
Music outlets like The Fader, HypeBot, VH1 and MTV have also jumped on the Pinterest stage.Record labels are also using the service to promote artists and new releases. Many labels create boards specific to popular artists in their roster, effectively giving those artists a semi-official presence on the site without requiring them to manage it. This approach offers less opportunity for deep engagement with fans, but it's a start.
Success Is Hard to Measure
As popular as Pinterest is becoming generally, for musicians it's still a realm of early adopters. Relatively few artists have official accounts on the site. Even Amanda Palmer, who is often noted for effective use of Twitter and other social platforms, hasn't pinned anything.
How can an artist know whether Pinterest is paying off? Success can be difficult to gauge. Certainly, artists with a large following on Pinterest should expect to see an increase in video views, listens and click-throughs to related media and articles. For smaller acts, the payoff may not be as dramatic at first. In either case, metrics don't exist that would help artists and managers determine the effectiveness of a particular strategy. Did pinning those new tracks from SoundCloud help get them heard by more people? Maybe, but neither SoundCloud nor Pinterest offers analytics granular enough to know for sure.
Pinterest doesn't yet have a huge community of bands and musicians, but features like SoundCloud integration will likely encourage more to take advantage of the service. What it does have is a sizable - and growing - user base, something artists would be wise to tap into early."
