James Hetfield of Metallica Jams at Guitar Center and Talks Music

James Hetfield, the man himself, sat down with us at Guitar Center in San Francisco. In the small room, he shared stories about becoming a musician, rising to fame, and even played a bit. All the while, customers continued to shop in the store, having no idea it was James playing, Hetfield's new ESP Iron Cross.

The Green Lady Killers
Things are about to get quite interesting for the Green Lady Killers. Not only do they have new singles coming out this fall, but they have a feature podcast interview coming up with a punk icon, next month. Top that with a feature in Tom Tom Magazine and its just the beginning. After hearing these new tracks, we can be the the first to say that the Green Lady Killers have hit a new stride in their music and the buzz around Los Angeles is that they are the band to break out and go big. Need we keep on waxing poetic or do ya get the picture?

At Guitar Center With Nic Harcourt Podcasts

The amount of interesting content online is staggering and the micro cultures that are evolving are creating entirely new forms of communication with levels of depth for any one to plunge into at will. Meander over to Guitar Center and check out the podcast interviews with Nic Harcourt. We happened to stumble into this while looking for some portable recording microphones for our video work and quickly found our new morning listening booth. The best part about these interviews is the peek behind the curtains and hearing the stories of what makes these folks tick.

More on Nic Harcourt:

Regarded as the ultimate "tastemaker" in music, Nic Harcourt is the former host of both Morning Becomes Eclectic and the syndicated show Sounds Eclectic. After 10 years as KCRW Music Director, Nic stepped down in 2008 to pursue other opportunities. Still a DJ at KCRW, Nic currently serves as an Editor-at-Large for Music and Culture at the Los Angeles Times Magazine and is music supervisor for the hit show 90210.

Born in Birmingham, England, he started his world travels in Australia and lived there during his mid 20's. He arrived in the United States in 1988 with a bagful of records and charmed his way into a part-time gig at the well-respected independent station WDST in Woodstock, New York. By the time he left for KCRW, he had gone from the midnight shift to Music Director.

He began hosting the daily Morning Becomes Eclectic in 1998 featuring his picks from the best new music, spanning a wide range of genres. A weekly version of the show, then-called Sounds Eclectic, aired on a number of other public radio stations around the country and worldwide. The shows include live performances by both established and rising stars.

Many artists, including Dido, Coldplay and Norah Jones, have credited Harcourt for putting the map and helping them achieve stardom. He's also helped launch the careers of Ting Tings, Sigur Ros, Damian Rice, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and countless others. He has been described by music writer Mark Weingarten as "the most influential DJ in America."

KCRW has long been regarded as a Los Angeles cultural institution, and Harcourt raised the bar for the station by introducing events such as station-sponsored KCRW and KCRW.com Presents concerts. KCRW was the first station to broadcast from remote locations like SXSW, CMJ and the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Nic also produced the Sounds Eclectic CD compilation series. The latest CD, Sounds Eclectic: The Next One, is available via Amazon.

Harcourt's first foray into literature was Music Lust,a book of "recommended listening for every mood, moment and reason."

He has also worked as music consultant/supervisor for several television shows including: 90210, Queer as Folk, Life as We Know It, In Justice, What about Brian and Love Monkey (for which he was also a co-producer), as well as advertising campaigns for Mitsubishi Motors, Apple's iPod and Victoria's Secret. Nic has helped to select music for the motion pictures He's Just Not That into You, Pride and Glory, Ice Age, Ice Age II, Anchorman, Igby Goes Down, Gone Baby Gone, Dukes of Hazzard and the upcoming Fireflies in the Garden. For the last two years, Nic was the "voice of Land Rover" for all of their television and radio commercials.

Green Lady Killers To Return To Arizona With Two Shows in March

"It's been a minute since I've seen The Green Lady Killers in action. The hometown garage rockers relocated to Los Angeles some time ago, but before that I used to enjoy dipping into random dive bars to catch a live show by the grrrly trio.

Needless to say I was pretty stoked yesterday when they announced on the band's Facebook page, two Arizona shows coming up in March.

You see, GLK always reminds me of the first and last time I walked through the ally entrance of the Emerald Lounge, one of the Valley's premier local music venues before it closed down in 2005.

Located just below what is now Sidebar on Seventh Avenue and McDowell, I only have feint memories of the musky club, but I hold them near and dear. A transplant from the City of Angels, I was still finding my bearings back then when a friend and I stumbled in. We heard some bands were going to be playing later on that night so we loaded up and hung out.

I only remember two of the bands that played that night. The first, was some touring death metal act fronted by this chick with a wicked death growl followed by GLK.

Cherrybomb, with her signature black bangs and animal print something or other, accosted the crowd with her gaze as she flailed on drums, while the leather-clad, high heeled Lady Van Buren wailed and shredded on guitar. This was how I was indoctrinated to the Arizona music scene. It also marks the one and only time I've bought band merch that wasn't a CD.

The Green Lady Killers play Friday, March 9, at Hollywood Alley in Mesa, and again, Saturday, March 10, at Inkenstein Tattoo's annual anniversary party.

I may have to bust out my GLK T-shirt, I'm not sure yet."

More information on NAMM

NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), commonly called NAMM in reference to the organization's popular NAMM trade shows, is the not-for-profit association that unifies, leads and strengthens the $17 billion global music products industry. Our association—and our trade shows—serve as a hub for people wanting to seek out the newest innovations in musical products, recording technology, sound and lighting. NAMM's activities and programs are designed to promote music making to people of all ages. The Model for Industry Growth—The History

Before there was an industry or an association, there was a belief...in music. That belief led to a mission: to unify, lead and strengthen the global music products industry and increase active participation in music making.

More than a century later, that mission has attracted a growing, thriving worldwide community of thousands of deeply passionate, talented companies that make, buy and sell the instruments that allow millions of people to make music. That community is called NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry.

NAMM is able to support the association's mission with a business model based on a circle of benefits that promotes industry growth. The circle begins with the revenue derived from NAMM's trade shows, which is channeled back into the industry through the NAMM Foundation's funding of industry charities and in the form of advocacy and market-building programs and initiatives, further increasing public awareness. This leads to increased demand of music products, growing the industry and, ultimately, promoting trade show growth, which completes the circle. To support individual Members, NAMM offers industry education through NAMM University, publishes valuable one-of-a-kind statistical reports, and brings the industry together at events and global meetings.

Founded in 1901, NAMM has been the engine driving the music products industry, enabling both large and small businesses to maximize productivity and reduce the costs of doing business. With more than 9,000 Members in the United States and 100+ other countries, NAMM is ultimately dedicated to expanding the market and giving people of all ages the opportunity to experience the proven benefits of making music.
