Hand Painted Billboards Used To Dominate The Sunset Strip In Hollywood. What Happened To Real Art?

Tommy, The Movie, Billboard
The Who created one of the most iconic billboard advertisements towering above the Sunset Strip

Hand painted billboards used to dominate the sunset strip in Hollywood throughout the 70's and then a moment in history changed everything. MTV was born and ushered in a new era on the way we consume music and pop culture.

After checking out these great hand painted billboards it only serves as a reminder as to how much an iconic album meant back in the day. Artwork was crucial to relaying a message rather then just a few key photos or illustrated lines to post to Instagram to make followers stay attentive.

We are huge fans of albums as a package and as a way to help an album be accepted by the mass populace, but these billboards are an art form all to themselves.

The Big Bird Cage - Women So Hot With Desire They Melt The Chains That Enslave Them!

B Movie Cinema has been a staple of ours since we first learned of the legendary Dolemite in in the early 90's. His rants on "Rat Soup Eatin' Honkey Mutha Fucka's" are legendary. Those classic films opened up many doors and now we want to start showcasing some of our favorites weekly. First up is The Big Bad Bird Cage starring Pam Grier and Sid Haig, read below for the synopsis and watch the trailer.

"Terry, a social-climbing young woman accidentally gets caught up in the activities of two revolutionaries, Blossom and Django, and finds herself in a concentration camp for women. In the center of the camp is a towering wooden machine ("The Big Bird Cage") in which the women risk their lives processing sugar as the evil warden looks on. The prisoners are subjected to sadistic cruelty from the guards and fellow prisoners, and all attempts at escape are dealt with...permanently. Terry's only hope for escape lies in Blossom and her revolutionary allies."

Johnny Ramone - Thanks For The Memories

I had completely forgotten about Johnny Ramones grave being in Hollywood so we decided to cruise over and check it out. We have a really cool project coming up featuring Antiseen, Flat Tires and ahem, some tunes involving the man mentioned above, more on that later this year. If you have the chance, stop by and pay respects to one member of a great band that will forever influence what we know is punk rock. Dee Dee is also in the same grave yard just on the other side of the pond.

The quote on the bottom plaque says it all and its exactly our mindset. "If a man can tell if he's been successful in his life by having great friends, then I have been very successful." This one is for you Johnny, thanks for picking up that guitar and changing rock n' roll forever.
