Rory Kelly Write Up From Newnan, GA

Rory Kelly rolls in Newnan, GA
Link to post on Times-Herald

"On Saturday and Sunday, Rory Kelly’s Triple Threat comes to Jekyll and Hyde’s for two shows to sling rock ‘n roll all over Newnan.

Rory Kelly’s Triple Threat emerged out of the dissolution of Kelly’s former band, Crank County Daredevils, when he then put together his dream group eventually consisting of his father, Mike, on drums (Rory jokingly insists his dad earned being the drummer; it wasn’t a merits system) and Billy Miller on bass. In the two years since forming the current lineup, the product of small-town Marion, NC, RKTT has found success, even taking their “southern swamp rock” overseas to places like Spain, Germany and France.

On the back of their 2012 album, “Don’t Shake My Family Tree,” RKTT was able to tour Europe and catch the eye of Jack Mascari, a veteran producer in North Carolina who’s worked with people like Warren Haynes, the longtime guitarist for The Allman Brothers and the frontman of Government Mule.

Mascari is producing the new album the band is working on and they plan on playing several songs from it at the shows this weekend. I asked Kelly the difference between playing in the States and playing overseas, and though he loves playing anywhere and everywhere, he has noticed stark differences.

“[In Europe], they come out in droves every time. We did 14 shows in 15 days and had 12 sellouts. These people had never heard of us before in their lives, but they knew we were coming [to their cities] and they learned every word. They were singing along to our songs.”

Just like in soccer matches, crowds will also make up chants. After one of their shows in Spain, a group of kids followed them to their tour bus chanting “Rory Kelly Ohhhhhh.” Kelly laughs recalling the experience. “It was kind of awkward but it was cool. I want to see our hometown crowds have that same kind of energy.”

Kelly recalls a French magazine writer who reviewed one of their shows and called them the best child of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Motorhead and Guns N’ Roses, something the band appreciated and won’t disagree with. They’ve been called southern sleaze for their penchant for southern roots rock and their hard edge sound that rocks. Beneath the muscle of their music is a band who works hard, touring every chance they get and relishing the opportunity to rock a crowd.

“There’s a lot of energy on that stage. We’re going to go up there and throw it down like we always do.”

Saturday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. There is a $5 cover for those over 21 and $10 for those under on Saturday night. Sunday afternoon is Jekyll and Hyde’s biker rally which is open to the public for free. Jekyll and Hyde’s is located at 10 The Boulevard in Newnan. For more information call 770-683-5000."

Stevie Tombstone Creates ALTCO Music

Stevie Tombstone creates new imprint label, ALTCO Music within Rusty Knuckles
ALTCO is a brand new imprint label within Rusty Knuckles being helmed by none other than Stevie Tombstone. After working with a few varying music labels over the last couple of years, Stevie wanted to have a place that he could call home. Another interesting aspect of the new imprint label will be his role as an A&R liaison scouring the highways and byways seeking out bands to become part of the ALTCO team of recording artists.

The imprint label of ALTCO is a welcome addition to the Rusty Knuckles team and will become an integral part of the line up featuring artists more directly focused on Folk Country Blues. Right out of the gate we will be adding much of Stevie Tombstone's back catalog of albums including Slow Drunken Waltz, Greenwood and previously unheard material from The Tombstones. Other acts signed on to become part of ALTCO are WhiskeyDick from Fort Worth, Texas, Kern Richards out of Long Beach, California and Black Eyed Vermillion hailing from Austin, TX.

"I am damn excited to finally be the captain of my own ship and to be able to focus on a solid outlet for all of my material and projects that I would like to have my finger print on. A place where my music can be heard and I control all aspects from marketing to distribution, without sacrificing quality or having to bow down to corporate wannabes."
- Stevie Tombstone

More news about ALTCO will be coming in a few weeks. So check out some of the great talent coming onboard.

JB Beverley New Album Illustration By Kitty Barks

Well folks, I can tell you with absolute certainty, that we have something bad ass coming up for JB Beverley's new album "Stripped To The Root." Not only are we making some interesting promotional items to go along with the album, but we enlisted Kitty Barks to revamp an idea that sat dormant. The album packaging is going to have the kind of vibe that is absolutely Rusty Knuckles. It will be unique artwork encompassing all that this great album will unleash sonically and be the perfect visual solution to a record that is going to burn down genre boundaries.

Once we have a few more elements locked into place, a pre-sale will be posted and package deals will be available for purchase. Being that we have so many things happening around this album, we are pushing it back a few weeks as there are a few surprises along the way which we had to be sure did not get left out. Needless to say, stay tuned as there are quite a few more things to find out about this great project.

Rock / Fight Photography Exhibition

The ROCK/FIGHT music and sports exhibition will feature iconic and historic photos
Find out more info at Art Daily

"LOS ANGELES, CA.- The renowned Morrison Hotel Gallery partnered with L.A.'s cultural destination Project Gallery and Peligroso Tequila in Hollywood, CA on Thursday, September 12th as they present ROCK/FIGHT, a photography exhibition that pairs iconic rock 'n roll images, with legendary figures in boxing and wrestling. A private press hour will take place from 6 to 7 PM on Thursday, September 12th, followed by a private reception from 7 to 9 PM, hosted by author, rock star and radio host Henry Rollins.

Project Gallery hours are Wednesday thru Friday from 12 PM to 6 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Also available by appointment. They are located at 1553 North Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood. The exhibition will be open to the general public September 13th thru October 6th.

The ROCK/FIGHT music and sports exhibition will feature iconic and historic photos, including many of the enormous personalities of the most important era at L.A.'s Grand Olympic Auditorium, from renowned photographer Theo Ehret. Ehret began taking pictures of boxers and wrestlers in and around downtown L.A.’s Olympic Auditorium in the mid 1960’s. Hired to shoot publicity “mug shots” and document the action in the ring, his haunting black and white images dramatically display the larger-than-life characters and the scene at one of the great fight venues in America. By 1980, the Olympic's reputation was that of a notorious Punk Rock venue where concerts were held with the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion.

The pairings featured in this exhibition will include works from photographers Janette Beckman, Danny Clinch, Edward Colver, Henry Diltz, Lynn Goldsmith, Bob Gruen, Rene Huemer, Catherine McGann, Paul Natkin, Ebet Roberts, Mick Rock, Ethan Russell, Stephanie Pfriender Stylander and Barrie Wentzell. Featured subjects will include Muhammad Ali, Mando Ramos, Mil Mascaras, Sid Vicious, Stiv Bators, Circle Jerks and Minor Threat.

Says gallery co-owner and iconic photographer Timothy White of the exhibit, “This is a really exciting opportunity to take imagery that is so special and pair it with the best rock photography ever created. There is a law in motion that exists in the photography of fighting and violence that also exists in rock photography. This pairing is like a graceful ballet between the two. It’s fun and exciting to see these images paired and Morrison Hotel Gallery is excited to be working together with Project Gallery on this exhibit.”"

Curious About How To Fix Anything, Take It Apart

There are many days when I feel fortunate to have been brought up in a household that valued hard work, over just buying new things. It is not as if we had a choice, money didn't grow on trees and there weren't other options. This also means that we were taught to fix everything.

It is easy to complain about many items now being unfixable and that may be partially true, as a plethora of products are built for planned obsolescence. The unfortunate aspect to this sort of mass production of junk, is that it creates an entirely disposable culture and we lose a sense of value in craftsmanship.

Why take care of a new product when it will only be phased out in a year or two and won't allow for updates from the cloud? We all have been part of this with an item such as a cell phone. Recently though I got laughing on how some products are built to be workhorses. I have one of the first versions of the ipod Shuffle from 2005 and I have been using it for workouts since. Bravo to Apple for keeping it simple and useful, but will it last for over 20 years, well that is highly doubtful.

A while back was hanging out at the folk's house and decided that I needed to check what was in the attic. The old toys had long been gone, but I was after some of Chief's old gadgets as he gifted me the fixit gene. In the garage attic I stumbled upon some really cool old items that had a lot of character and after pulling them apart you could see how well they were built. The soldering was done with heavier gauge wire, the metals were stout and overall the gadgetry still functioned in it's mechanical state.

Many times I hear complaints from all sorts of folks that they have no concept how to fix anything. Take it from a life time tinkerer, just explore and let it be an adventure. Imagine what you are taking apart is just one big puzzle. If you fail to put it back together correctly, keep working at it until there are no parts left. Try to imagine how each piece works and in the process you will be teaching yourself mechanical aptitude, elementary physics, circuitry and a host of other skills.

"What is a scientist after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what's going on." - Jacques Cousteau

"Forged from a passion to live in the days when men were men and speed was speed, Dime City Cycles has partnered with Triumph Motorcycles, British Customs, Progressive Suspension and The Speed Merchant to bring you the Triumph "CR" line of products. An aftermarket accessory ensemble to customize and individualize your modern Triumph Classic in honor of the Gods of Speed.

So, when you're looking for the fastest, coolest and swankiest parts for your Triumph you know where you gotta go... A place where the last few American heroes still swill bourbon, smoke cigars and create from raw elements with their bare hands.

That place is Dime City: The place where your alter ego lives and breathes, awaiting your return if even for a brief moment so it can once again tap into the soul of that two wheeled terror that taunts it.

A place unlike any other, where deep black paint reflects the overhead fluorescent lights - the air carries the scent of gasoline and motor oil - and, if you are fortunate, the sound of an overhead cam twin breathing through velocity stacks as it screams towards 9,000rpm.

The feeling is visceral. You're confused but it's ok. You roll with it.

Welcome to the city where everything you've ever wanted for your modern Triumph Twin is waiting...for you. A place where a man can be a man once and for all.

Head on over to http://www.dimecitycycles.com for more information!"

Run What Ya Brung 3 - Western, Virginia

Nothing can be quite as good as the crisp fall air and rollin' through the Blue Ridge Mountains. For our third annual Run What Ya Brung, we are opting to hit some new roads and to get a killer back yard party running full throttle.

This is the rundown plain and simple. Friday night we will be rolling into the Willville Motorcycle Camp in Meadows of Dan, VA. Right up the street at the Floyd Country Store is a Friday night jam session of local musicians. The campsite offers cabins, bunk houses, camp sites along with showers and other facilities on site.

On Saturday we will be hitting some back roads and eventually ending up at a buddy of ours private property for a back yard jam session off the Blue Ridge Parkway, by Galax Virginia. The Jam Session will be with JB Beverley, Buck Thrailkill and Jake Cox for some good ol' Americana, Bluegrass and Real Country music. Camping will be allowed on site for free as long as everyone cleans up after themselves and is respectful of the property.

Anyone is welcome to roll in for the Saturday party if you want to enjoy the music, as it's all about a good time. Being that there is no charge for camping on Saturday as it's private property, it will be at minimum a $10 donation for the band fund. We will be posting a more info about the run shortly, but check your calendar, tune your ride and clear the dates.

Stories woven into the songs on Greenwood, From Stevie Tombstone

Stevie Tombstone has started to deliver many of his road weary tales from his new tumblr page More Tombstone Tales. We will be re-posting them on this end as well so keep up with ol' Stevie and have a read on what has made him into the well regarded old soul that he is.

Legendary blues man Johnny Shine
"There are often little things that get overlooked or left out of the behind the music type postings and interviews. Trivial to some or too technical for those who are outside the craft. Often the inside jokes and surprises are the best because they are real.

Heres an example you may find interesting, shortly after the eventful trip to Greenwood Mississippi with Rick Richards and Johnny Shines  Before his death I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Johnny and his family to some degree. I played several other shows with him and Jeff Johnson  around Tennessee and Alabama. Johnny enthralled audiences with tales of his younger days traveling with Robert Johnson and claim to the last undocumented Johnson tune.I remember him bursting into my hotel room at 6 am one morning in brand new pinstripe suit guitar in hand exclaiming ” get up white boys and break out those fancy new guitars”. Hungover and bewildered we broke into Sweet Home Chicago out of a dead sleep! You can make up stuff like that and they don’t make characters of his caliber anymore .

Being young and outgoing I was often guilty of stepping on the songs with occasional overplaying and or “rushin” it as he would say. Johnny would send us off with is guitar two sheets in the wind out side to to the dressing room with instructions to tune it to various keys, mostly hard to decipher and usually we just scratched our heads. The key most requested was open A flat. This was not a common tuning and the answer was simple but too simple to see the woods for the trees. His goal was accomplished however by keeping us off the stage for a few songs.

Years later while working on the song Greenwood  realized the answer was very simple and only required a new point of view A flat = G sharp in music terms. He had had the last laugh long after his passing. All we needed was a capo and some humility. The characters in this tale are woven into the last verse of the song Greenwood and Its been recorded and arranged in Johnny’s favorite key of G sharp."
