Buzzoven - A West Coast Tour Story, by Kirk Lloyd Fisher
![]() |
Photo by Chris Boarts Larson |
From Buzzoven Kirk's blog on Google...
"So its been right at a week since our west coast tour with the mighty Bongzilla ended. Needless to say, we hit it off very well with the Bongzilla boys.Actually Dixie played on one of their albums and did a tour with them. Me and Michael (Pee Wee) really hit it off and i firmly believe i have a new brother in him for life. Touring with them, renting their back line and all around working together made life on this tour much easier. Bongzilla is still out there touring so get out and see them and buy some merch if you can to support this hard working band.
I have a few individual stories to tell but I'm just typing some thoughts and observations from this recent 8 day jaunt through the west. I want to be sure i tell the stories i have as they actually happened and get permission from all those involved so i don't step on any toes or piss anyone off. I never piss anyone off. HA!! While our first tours back, in 2011,after 10 years of doing nothing proved to be lucrative and full of hype, this recent leg of shows, which by the way was after another 4 year lull proved to be good but only part of the hype previously experienced was present. It's becoming painfully obvious that if we don't stay busy, tour and work harder we will slowly dwindle back to an unknown band of the past. Some musicians i feel get spoiled from certain things being a certain way and expect that every tour or show will be just as lucrative and also bigger venues with a consistent amount of crowd attendance. Which of course is not the reality of being in the music business as things change year to year and even day to day.

"Buzzoven was a band ahead of their time, or a band that was part of starting a trend, depending on your perspective. In the early ‘90s, these North Carolina boys were touring a lot and playing punk shows. Their regular visits to NYC garnered a loyal following and kinship with local bands. At a time when peace punks were getting into doom metal and bands with firm roots in hardcore punk started playing slow and heavy, bands like Buzzoven were right in the middle of a new genre of sludge stoner doom metal. In 1993 Buzzoven was really just a new breed of slow and heavy hardcore. Oh, what the future had in store. - Chris Boarts Larson" Check out Slug and Lettuce

Tales From East End Blvd: The Dive Bars We All Love
![]() |
The new defunct Doozer's Pub in Jacksonville, FL |
Most people who love a good dive bar have their own personal favorite, usually in their neighborhood or close-by. The stinky walls, the sticky floors, your kind of music on the jukebox and your kind of beer on tap. The live music - it’s so up-close and personal in these tiny places. Music is a huge factor here at these bars and sometimes it’s ALL about the music. Music is universal. Everyone likes some form of it. The ones that live for it, though, can usually be found in dive bars.
I’ve been playing music to pay the bills for quite a while now. I go in, I “work”, I get paid. It’s just like any other job (I refuse to call it a job though). Nonetheless, I don’t always get paid what I should if I’m playing a dive. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played them and at the end of the night I got paid almost NOTHING after a 2-4 hour drive. Funny thing is, my band and I had the best time of our freaking lives on stage those nights and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Why is that? What is it that’s so appealing about a dive bar to patrons and musicians? Maybe it’s the fact that nobody is trying to impress anyone. Maybe it’s the companionship and the comfort. Maybe it’s the fact that, usually, everyone in a dive bar is a music lover so there’s always something to talk about (my personal favorite reason). Maybe it’s all of the above. All signs point back to music in one way or another but, whatever the reason, I love them and tons of people all over the world agree.

JJ's Bohemia in Chattanooga, TN and its locals |
My favorite is the first time I saw the late, great T-Model Ford. When I won the Best Blues Band award for TN / GA in 2009, the JJ’s Bohemia owner, John Shoemaker, said he had something for me and asked me to open for the T-Model Ford / Black Diamond Heavies / Mark “Porkchop” Holder bill the following month. I replied with something similar to “You damn right I will!!”. I got to jam with T-Model in the middle of the bar before they opened the doors. T was playing my guitar, I was playing his, and my drummer at the time, Burma Shave, was behind the kit. I also got to sit in on lead guitar during T’s song “Chickenhead Man” with him later that night and every other night he played JJ’s before he passed!

Another great dive that comes to mind is Doozers in Jacksonville, FL. Don’t go looking for it, it’s gone. Doozers was simply amazing. A tiny little building on the edge of town. It was a punk rock dive, nothing more. Inside it’s walls were people that loved music...period. I made good friends and no money there. Did I care about the paycheck part? Hell no!! It was the best damn show of the FL run every year! Sweaty, shirtless kids jumping around like wild, banshee monkeys. Who would’ve thought that my music would even remotely entertain them? Boy, did it ever! They were flinging themselves in circles of rage, kicking mic stands over and going crazy for 3 - 4 minutes at a time. I really miss that place. The owner, TJ Doozer, had something special there but, eventually, she had to let it go like many other dive owners have to.
It’s memories and first-times like these that you just won’t get anywhere else. Even though some of the dives that I really loved to play are gone, there are new ones that come along that somewhat replace the emptiness and bring on a new life of it’s own. One of them is Shore Road Tavern in northeast Philadelphia, PA. Wow, what a bunch of awesome, friendly folks. Mike Fiedler and his wife Kathy have really got a good thing going. Why? It’s because of those same ol’ reasons I mentioned at the beginning: everyone is a music lover, your kind of music on the jukebox, your kind of beer on tap, your kind of folks.

Pennsylvania State Rep Michael Tomlinson hanging out at Shore Road post-show |
There are no show-offs here, no uppity attitudes, just good folks who are looking to wind down and have a damn good time. One night I was playing an official state representative was even in there hanging out. Real people, real things (I may sound like Russell Hammond, guitarist for Stillwater in the film Almost Famous but, it’s the truth. It’s all about the real). Mike has become a brother of mine these days. Him and his crew of misfits are some of the most real people I’ve ever hung out with and because of that, I call Philly and Shore Road my second home now. I try to pass through every chance I get, whether I’m on tour or not. Mike and Kathy are truly down for the cause and Shore Road is making history, like every other good dive bar that does it for the right reasons. They are a rare breed for sure and we love them for it.

Buzzoven To Headline Roadburn Festival On April 10th
![]() |
Buzzoven will be headlining Roadburn Festival on April 10th |
"Roadburn 2014 is ecstatic to announce that sludge / stoner legends Buzzov*en will be making an extremely special performance, headlining the Thursday, Roadburn date, April 10th at the 013 venue.
Formed in 1989 when heavy riffs primarily meant grunge, Buzzov*en brought a particularly virulent malice and filth to their music that often manifested itself in extreme violence at their live shows. Not surprisingly, given their level of intensity and their heavy touring schedule, their lineup was quite volatile and changed frequently.
Now remaining original member Kirk Lloyd Fisher (guitar / vox) has re-joined forces with bassist Dixie Dave (Weedeater, Bongzilla, Buzzov*en‘s …At A Loss) and drummer Ashley (To A Frown, Sore) to reform the band and bring them to Europe for the first time ever. Time (and sobriety) may have tempered Buzzov*en‘s shows to be less broken glass and blood filled, but the music remains as potent as ever.
“I’m looking forward to Buzzov*en’s rebirth being at Roadburn. I am gearing up to make our European debut an onslaught of swamp ass gutteral delusions. I have started my ascent out of my corner of HELL that caged me. With the help of fellow members Dixie, Ash and Floyd, we have chosen you all to assault first. Welcome to violence fuckers” – Kirk / Dirtkicker.
In the 12 years Buzzov*en was together, they released 4 LP’s (To A Frown, Sore, …At A Loss, Revelation: Sick Again) and 5 EP’s along with their legendary Buttrash demo tape. The influence of the band far exceeds their recorded output though, as Buzzov*en and Eyehategod are the forefathers of sludge / stoner metal and have made themselves household names in the metal underground through their frequent tours that spread the sludge gospel far and wide, and spawned countless musical offspring wherever they roamed.
We feel extremely lucky to be able to bring Buzzov*en to the Roadburn Festival to give everyone a chance to experience their vitriolic riffs and rage filled performance."

Bloodwitch

Bloodwitch is set to release the album "Tell Your God To Ready For Blood" |
BLOODWITCH, the Boston/Providence-based band featuring current members of SEEMLESS and former members of KILGORE. According to the band's official bio, "BLOODWITCH was formed in 2007 by SEEMLESS guitarists Pete Cortese and Jeff Fultz. Pete had begun writing songs for their anticipated third album and found that many of the tunes just didn't fit right for SEEMLESS. What had emerged was a combination of influences from the golden age of British heavy metal, the early style of Bay Area thrash metal, the boogie of AC/DC and ZZ TOP, with the dual guitar harmonies of THIN LIZZY. With the quality of songwriting, Cortese was able to enlist ex-KILGORE vocalist Jay Berndt and ex-KILGORE drummer Bill Southerland into the fold. Rounding out the five-piece is producer and keyboard player for Worcester metal band FROZEN, Pete Rutcho on bass guitar."
BLOODWITCH music focuses on Berndt's lyrical interpretation of a war-hungry society and the band's modern delivery of classic metal. Stay tuned for the new album entitled "Tell Your God To Ready for Blood".

Peewee Moore

Country music troubadour Peewee Moore joins Rusty Knuckles for 2014 |
Peewee Moore is a self proclaimed Honkytonk / Outlaw Country Singer / Songwriter in the same vein as Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Johnny Paycheck, and Hank Williams. He has been barnstorming around the country with his trio dubbed "Peewee Moore & The Awful Dreadful Snakes" doing an endless string of one night stands from Austin TX to you name it. If you havent caught a show it's your own fault!
Born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachian rainforest just across the TN border in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, Peewee spent most of his time haunting the streets of Chattanooga TN playing many of his first shows in, and around the "Choo Choo" city. Peewee spent the consecutive years making a name for himself as an accomplished picker, and songwriter throughout the Southeast.
With the gift of raw talent, and showmanship Peewee has been fortunate enough to be able to share the stage with several of his hero's, as well as some of outlaw country, Americana, and rockabilly's most well known, and recieved acts such as Billy Joe Shaver, David Allen Coe, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, Charlie Daniels, Junior Brown, Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Cowboy Jack Clement, Shooter Jennings, James McMurtry, Chris Knight, Dicky Betts, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Todd Snyder, Wanda Jackson, Southern Culture On The Skids, Scott H. Biram, Bobby Bare Jr, and countless others.
