Motobunny Interview On Artist Direct

Motobunny photo - nie-dravnos.deviantart.com

"Who are Motobunny? We are glad you asked. You will find out everything you need to know about the band via this Take Aim feature.

Strap yourselves in and get acquainted with Motobunny.

Twitter-size your bio.

After years of touring together in different bands, four longtime friends from Los Angeles and Phoenix sketched out an idea for a co-female-fronted band built on glossy glitter pop harmonies, vicious rock riffs, slick bass grooves and Bonham-esque drums. We recorded 12 original tracks in Detroit with Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Dirtbombs). The result was electric, the songs infectious. Our debut album, Motobunny, is now blasting into earbuds and airwaves around the world. We are four friends who love sharing on-stage and off-stage time together more than ever before and have set our sights on a future world tour.

If you were not doing music, you would be...

Michael: An artist of some sort…
Rik: A priest.
Nicole: On a champagne tour of France or designing shoes.
Christa: Dead.

Any non-music hobbies, talents or skills?

Nicole: Writing children's books, professional-grade napping.
Michael: Graphic design, cappuccino-making.
Rik: Hobbies: Metal detecting; Skills: Speaking in tongues.
Christa: I love cooking, I sew, make jewelry, dabble in millinery, paint, pretty much anything working with my hands! I have a store on Etsy (Bandit Boutique) where I sell some of my creations. www.Etsy/shop/BanditBoutique.com

Pick ONE song on your record and share a writing or recording story. Something intimate, that you haven't told anyone else (or at least a bunch of writers or journalists) and that which puts us in the moment with you. Let's get intimate, shall we?

'The Other Side' might be the most intimate song on the album. Michael wrote it from the perspective of his uncle, trying to imagine what he went through during his final days in hospice care.

Christa: My favorite song is 'I Warned You.' It has just the right amount of pain and angst. It's threatening while at the same time you can't help but surrender to it. It's a universal theme I think everyone has experienced at one point in their lives. This whole album was basically written in our pajamas at Michael and Nicole's place over the course of two weekends. We then headed to Detroit to record it, and run through the snow like 5-year-olds. We all shared a studio motel room. The fireplace worked but as we discovered the hard way one night, was to be used at your own risk. We did a lot of cooking to try and cut the expense of eating out while we were there. It was a blast! Nicole and I recorded vocals together in a little closet-like booth that we draped in material and found objects to set the mood. We had a bunch of weird props which we found at the dollar store down the street and masks were involved. The ambience put us in the right headspace for maximum rocking, and well theatrics are just Fun!

Finish this sentence: Motobunny is the band that...

...will guarantee you a good time and will put bunny masks, keytars and Lonnie Mack Flying V guitars on everyone's wishlists."

Motobunny Feature Review In Blurt Magazine

Motobunny Feature Review In Blurt Magazine

Order Motobunny's new album

Check out the review on Blurt Magazine

"There aren’t too many Iggy Pop-influenced pop/punk bands out there with a full-time keytarist and co-frontwomen, but Motobunny somehow manage to make it work.

It would be easy to dismiss the band as a novelty if they didn’t have the songs to back it up, but as their self-titled debut proves, they’ve got about a dozen.

The band was formed backstage at an Iggy gig a few years ago, when members from The Wooly Bandits and The Love Me Knots decided to merge. Collectively, the members have shared the stages with everyone from Nirvana and The Damned to Pearl Jam and X, but their album has a much more glam-punk vibe to it. From the Joan Jett-like rocker “Shake Me” to the just what it sounds like track “My Boyfriend is a Ghost” the band is distorted guitars with plenty of synths and hooks.

There are a few weaker tracks here and there, but ultimately, the record is an experiment in glitter and grease that ends well.

"One could get lost in the family tree that has sprouted Motobunny so let's just summarize: members of The Love Me Nots and The Woolly Bandits have combined to produce a double frontwoman glam meets garage meets rockabilly meets pop band that's as hard to resist as they are to define. Legend has it that the band got together after meeting up at an Iggy Pop concert, and their sound reflects it. "Shake Me" and "Let's Go Out" are as catchy as any Top 40 Taylor Swift hit, but with a Motley Crue flair. When Gwen Stefani took a break from No Doubt and became a pop star, that's kind of what Motobunny feels like -- like some rock 'n' roll chicks who wanted to get their Dance on.

Motobunny Announces Free Song Giveaway

Motobunny Announces Free Song Giveaway

Led by dual singers Christa Collins and Nicole Laurrene, the band’s aesthetic has as much to do with Laurrene’s Michigan rock roots as the surf sounds and pounding percussion of LA’s punk and garage scenes. Rarely does a rock band present with two such well-matched, intense vocalists, but the rest of Motobunny keep up easily, ripping through songs straight out of a Tarantino film.

Motobunny Feature Review On Innocent Words

Motobunny review on Innocent Words magazine
"Motobunny, not to be confused with Motorhead, Motorhoney or Motorsister, is an energetic rock & roll band led by the dual vocal powerhouses Christa Collins and Nicole Laurrene. Not since Louise Post and Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt has there been such a remarkable pairing for lead singers.
Christa Collins has performed and recorded with Little Richard, and Sky Saxon, just to name a couple. She currently fronts LA garage act The Woolly Bandits; became an “X Factor USA” Top 8 finalist; and has appeared in several films. Nicole Laurenne was an award-winning classical pianist as a teen; has been named Arizona Republic’s “Best Frontperson”; and currently fronts both the Love Me Nots and electrofuzz duo Zero Zero.
Guitarist Michael Johnny Walker is on Phoenix New Times’ list of the Top 10 Phoenix Guitarists; founded and currently performs with The Love Me Nots; is featured in Fender Guitar’s “Soul of Tone” film with Dweezil Zappa; and both produces and performs with Zero Zero. Bassist Rik Collins has toured and recorded extensively with legendary garage rock act The Seeds before founding and performing with The Woolly Bandits.
For their self-titled debut, the quartet pulled out all the stops making their way to Detroit to record a dozen songs with Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Electric Six, Dirtbombs) and had the album mixed by Bob Hoag (The Format, Deer in The Headlights, Ataris), and mastered by Jason Livermore (Rise Against).
Everything Motobunny did to make this record has paid off in spades. It is fun, it is danceable and has songs filled with hooks which will bury themselves in your psyche and have you singing along without a care in the world. Their talent and experience pays off as well, as the band comes off remarkably tight for just their first album together while being very polished, thanks in part to the engineering crew.
At times Motobunny sound like a new wave ’80s band and will have your ass shaking with songs like “Let’s Go Out”; then they can get dark and sleazy on tracks like “Drown.” “Apocalypse Twist” is a balls-out rocker, and the album closer “I Warned You” is a heartbreak ballad of sorts. These are just a smattering of various sounds Motobunny brings you, and they make them all work very well together.
With band members having many irons in the fire, let’s hope Motobunny isn’t just a one-off project, because this debut album leaves you wanting more."

"I have always wanted to sit down at a cafĂ© table with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop along with Pia Zadora…. I have now just added Motobunny to this epitome of rock and pop culture imagery. Motobunny’s music is a thematic twist of, “C’mon and get it boys ‘cuz we are bad aces!”

I now need to adjust my leather skirt, straighten my fish nets, and apply my wicked luscious shade of femme fatale.

Motobunny Appearing Live On The Roland Sessions Stage

Motobunny Appearing Live On The Roland Sessions Stage
Roland Sessions is a live music performance series. This episode features the band Motobunny. They are performing their song “Thinkin’ About Me.”

Motobunny formed after members of two acclaimed rock bands, The Love Me Nots and The Woolly Bandits got on stage together in 2013. After years of sharing green rooms, tour vans, and seedy motel rooms, it was the first time they had performed as one band and the electricity was undeniable. Together they dashed off songs for a dual-frontwomen rock collaboration, enlisted the help of Love Me Nots drummer Jay Lien, and headed to Detroit to record a full-length album with Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Electric Six, Dirtbombs). Mixed by Bob Hoag (The Format, Dear and The Headlights, Ataris), and mastered by Jason Livermore (Rise Against), the result is 12 tracks of tough rock n’ roll topped off with a girls-just-wanna-have-fun attitude.

Motobunny Feature Review In The Lincoln Star Journal

Motobunny Feature Review In The Lincoln Star Journal

"From the first note of “The Other Side” on its self-titled debut, Motobunny comes on with hooky rock ‘n’ roll and keeps its garagey, glam-tinged sound going through the final ring out of “I Warned You."

Motobunny’s the result of a post-Iggy Pop concert union of Christa Collins, who’s played and recorded with, among others, Michael Jackson, Little Richard and Sky Saxon of the Seeds fame, and who fronts the Woolly Bandits, and Nicole Laurenne, a child classical pianist and lead singer of the Love Me Nots.

Motobunny Debuts New Track On Alternative Press

Motobunny Debuts New Track On Alternative Press
Los Angeles rockers MotoBunny are teaming up with AP to bring you their new music video for “Let’s Go Out.” The track is taken from the band’s latest self-titled album, which is out now. (Get it here.)

The band tell the story of the video:
“This video was shot full guerilla film style, one night in and around Hollywood, C.A. Our director, Matt Eskew, mounted a camera on his vintage Lincoln. Nicole and Christa then hit the road, but after a few minutes of shooting, the police pulled them over. When the cop realized they were shooting a music video, he let them go. In one shot, you can actually see the lights from the police car. What's this? A giant hand at a carwash?! Of course the Moto ladies had to climb all over it—what a lucky hand. About an hour before the shoot, Christa stitched up a bunny suit for Michael, who threw on some cheap sunglasses and took to Melrose Avenue with Rik and a couple guitars for a little busking action. Then they were off to the arcade on Vermont Avenue for a game of Guitar Hero. Families kept coming up and asking to take pictures with the bunny. You can actually see security kicking Rik and the bunny out. Eventually we all made our way up to Capitol Records, with the bunny banging on the front doors at nearly 2AM. Security wasn't having anything to do with Motobunny though… your loss, Capitol Records!”

Rory Kelly Debuts New Video, Sunshine

Rory Kelly Debuts New Video, Sunshine
Work ethic and drive are two elements that anyone and everyone needs to live by when it comes to perfecting their craft. Sitting on the sidelines or on social media accounts all day and waxing poetic doesn't get the job done or really say much in the big picture. It might help to keep an audience interested, but we are talking about music and it's all about the song, the attitude and a clear direction of purpose.

With The Demise Of Starbucks Instore CD Sales, Will They Continue To Promote New Music?

Starbucks to end selling cd's in all of their store locations
What will actually be the final nail in the coffin for the mass distribution of music retail? This is a juggernaut of a question and one to which many are seeking to find answers, but with little hope of a true resurgence of the sacred ground of what was once known as a record store. We have posted numerous other blog articles about this topic and where we personally think the music industry is heading.
